About the Singapore Math Olympiad 2025
The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad 2025 (SMO 2025) (Junior Section), organized by the Singapore Mathematical Society (SMS), aims to test the mathematical problem-solving skills of secondary school students in Singapore. The objective of the competition is to discover and encourage mathematical talent among students in secondary schools, high schools, and junior colleges in the country.
The competition is open to Secondary 1 and Secondary 2 students born on or after 2 January 2011 who have never attended a tertiary level educational institution on a full-time basis. Participants will first take Round 1, which is a two-and-a-half-hour written paper consisting of multiple choice and short-answer questions. The language of the competition will be English. Participants who perform well in Round 1 will be invited to participate in Round 2, a three-hour written paper with full-length solution questions.
The topics covered in the competition are based on the Secondary 1 and 2 mathematics curriculum, with many questions derived from the school syllabus. The registration fee for the competition is $10 per participant from SMS institutional member schools and $12 for those from non-institutional member schools.
Awards are given based on the results from both rounds. Individual awards, including Gold, Silver, and Bronze certificates, as well as Honourable Mentions, will be given to students who meet the set criteria. Only participants who make it to Round 2 will be considered for individual prizes, with Gold certificates being awarded based on combined results from both rounds. Additionally, schools will receive awards based on the number of participants and the number of awards received by students, which can lead to an SMO School Award in Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Commendation categories.
The school with the highest combined scores from its top three participants will win the Singapore Mathematical Society Challenge Trophy, which can be kept until the next competition. Schools that win the trophy five times consecutively will be allowed to keep it permanently. Results will be released within three months, and any disputes can be raised through the school’s teacher-in-charge within one month of the release. SMS reserves the right to finalize the results.
